MUSEUM OF MODERN ART (MODERNA MUSEET)
A must for art lovers, with a superb permanent collection, well located for a cultural walk.
Nestled in a long, single-story building from the industrial era, this museum of modern art enjoys a worldwide reputation. It was here that the famous Andy Warhol exhibited in his name for the first time in Europe. In addition to various temporary exhibitions, it offers the most important collection of modern art in the country. The collection consists of approximately 6,000 paintings, sculptures and installations, 25,000 watercolors and drawings, and a very fine collection of almost 100,000 photographs. The collection includes works by Picasso, Matisse, Salvador Dalí, Duchamp and Robert Rauschenberg, to name a few. The museum was strongly supported by the Swedish government, which a few years ago contributed 5 million SEK to support women artists, such as Louise Bourgeois and Susan Hiller, whose works were added to the collection. There is also an abundance of works by Swedish artists to introduce you to modern Nordic art. Its collection extends beyond the indoor exhibition spaces. Scattered around the island of Skeppsholmen are outdoor works, including sculptures by Niki de Saint Phalle and Pablo Picasso, making the island a great destination for a cultural walk. The museum also offers temporary exhibitions (program to be found on their website). There is also a restaurant with a superb view of the city!
