Skansen Hill, a shady park, offers a 360° panoramic view of the Haga district below, the shipyards, the old town and the river. At the top of the park stands the Skansen Kronan towerbuilt between 1687 and 1699 from large granite stones and topped by an imposing golden crown. This tower is one of the remains of the city's fortifications, when Gothenburg was the only access to the North Sea, encircled by the Norwegians to the north and the Danes to the south.
