SAINT CATHERINE'S CHURCH
Church dating from 1172, with a classical facade - one of Dublin's finest - and a small park to the rear.
St. Catherine's Church, which dates back to 1172, was completely rebuilt by John Smyth between 1760 and 1769. A bell tower was part of the plans, but it was never built because of lack of funds. The classical style façade is one of the most beautiful in the Irish capital. It is also in front of this church that Robert Emmett, instigator of a revolt against the British, was hanged in 1803. The old graveyard (which was used from 1552 to 1894), behind the church, is now a small public park.
