SAINT WERBURGH'S CHURCH
Church of Anglo-Norman origin built on a Viking site in 1178, the oldest in Dublin, a site steeped in history.
This church of Anglo-Norman origin was built on a Viking site in 1178, so it has the reputation of being the oldest church in the town. It was rebuilt in 1662, renovated by Thomas Burgh in 1715, but burnt down in 1754 (and was rebuilt in 1759). In the local archives there is a record of a Molly Malone, a fishmonger by trade, who died in 1734. It is also known that Jonathan Swift was baptised here, as were several members of the Guinness family, and that Lord Edward Fitzgerald is buried here.
