SAINT MARY'S ABBEY
Founded by Cistercian monks in 1139, this abbey is one of Dublin's best-kept secrets from medieval times.
St. Mary's is one of the best kept secrets of the medieval era. This abbey built by Cistercian monks in 1139 was one of the richest in the country, but it was destroyed in 1530 and today there is almost nothing left. Except two rooms, the Chapter House and the Slype. Its stones were used to build the Essex Bridge, known as the Grattan Bridge. Despite attempts to revive the place, Dubliners are almost unaware of the location of this abbey, which is struggling to fight against oblivion.
