SAINT MARY'S PRO CATHEDRAL
Catholic church, the most important in Dublin, built in anticipation of the real cathedral, which was never built
The most important Catholic church in Dublin was built between 1816 and 1825. The facade is inspired by the temple of Theseus in Athens. "Pro Cathedral" means that it is an unofficial cathedral. Originally, Saint Mary's was built while waiting for the real cathedral, but it was never built. Catholic Ireland has not had a cathedral since the Reformation, and for nearly 200 years Saint Mary's has played this substitute role. The interior is not remarkable.
