CUSTOM HOUSE
Neoclassical building, characteristic of Georgian architecture, historic site housing administrative offices
This imposing neo-classical building is characteristic of Georgian architecture. Built by the Irish architect James Gandon (1743-1823), it was completed in 1791. It was first used as the official Dublin Customs Office and played a role in the social, economic and political history of Dublin. In 1921, during the struggle for independence, it narrowly escaped destruction following a fire set by the IRA. The building now houses the Department of the Environment and government administrative offices.
