THE SPIRE
A remarkable needle-shaped sculpture, 120 m high, whose tip lights up at night - the highest sculpture in the world.
Officially named the "Monument of Light", the Spire is a huge needle-shaped sculpture measuring 120m high, the end of which lights up at night. It was unveiled in 2003 and stands on the site of a former statue of British Admiral Horatio Nelson that was destroyed by the IRA in 1966. Designed by architect Ian Ritchie, the Spire is said to be the tallest sculpture in the world. Although this surprising architectural work is often the cause of ridicule, it is nevertheless one of the new symbols of the capital.
