IRISH MUSEUM OF MODERN ART (IMMA)
Museum of Modern Art of Ireland, in Kilmainham's Royal Hospital, exhibiting fine collections of paintings, sculptures...
The Museum of Modern Art in Ireland (IMMA) opened in 1991 in the 17th century Royal Hospital in Kilmainham, a building which is worth a visit in itself. The hospital was built between 1680 and 1684 by the architect Wiliam Robinson who was inspired by the Invalides in Paris. Until 1928, it was used as a rest home for veteran soldiers, then left vacant until its restoration in 1980. It is arguably the finest 17th century building in the Irish capital and notably underwent a very extensive renovation in 2013. The modern, very airy and definitely contemporary look of the museum - glass staircase, aluminium railings, grey floor, white walls, cleverly designed lighting - blends perfectly with this place full of history. The museum houses temporary exhibitions, as well as a permanent collection of over 1,700 works - paintings, installations and sculptures - by renowned artists including Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Marina Abramovic, Willie Doherty, Gilbert and George, Gerard Byrne, Iran do Espírito Santo, Juan Mũnoz, Barrie Cooke, Howard Hodgkin, Tony O'Malley, Jack B. Yeats, Louise Bourgeois and others. It is quite simply the most important collection of modern art in Ireland. Attention art lovers!
Note that the museum'sgardens are also worth a visit. We advise you to cross them also during a visit to Kilmainham Gaol for example
