GENERAL POST OFFICE - GPO WITNESS HISTORY
Museum, located in the O'Connell Street post office, presenting the country's history and Irish Gaelic culture.
Stop by the vibrant O'Connell Street! The iconic GPO (General Post Office) was built between 1814 and 1818 in a classical style, as illustrated by its impressive colonnades. But the GPO is most famous as the home of the men and women who participated in the Easter Rising of 1916, the event that shaped modern Ireland. Then, it remained just a working post office that maintained a tradition of public service in a beautiful and renowned setting. But in 2016, to mark the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising, the new GPO Witness History Museum opened its doors within the iconic Dublin Central Post Office building. It offers a visit that immerses you in Irish history, notably by looking back at the landmark chapter of the "Bloody Easter", but also on the emergence of the Irish state, as well as on Irish Gaelic culture. The exhibition is truly fun and interactive with a 15-minute immersive audio-visual experience, touch screens, sound recordings, illustrations, period objects, etc. It's a must-see for a better understanding of the cultural identity of this country with its troubled history. A very instructive guided tour (for those who wish) of about an hour is also offered by the museum. Really fascinating!
