The botanical garden, which opened in 1795, is located 3 km north of the centre and is considered to be the best botanical and agricultural centre in Ireland. It covers 20 hectares and is home to over 17,000 species of plants and trees. There are paths leading to the rose garden, vegetable garden, orchid house, arboretum, Chinese garden and the 19th century wrought iron greenhouses which protect the rarest and most fragile flora. The Visitor Centre houses a restaurant and provides explanations on the role of the garden.
