COURTHOUSE
Remarkable monument, a significant example of European neoclassicism, one of the finest buildings in Ireland
This original courthouse was built in 1830 by the Irish architect William Vitruvius Morrison. In order to build it, he adopted a very surprising architecture which draws its inspiration from the temple of Ilissus in Athens. Indeed, the columns of the portico are reminiscent of a Greek temple. A significant example of European neoclassicism, the Carlow courthouse is probably the finest example of its kind in the country and certainly one of the finest 19th century buildings in Ireland. What to see.
