CARLOW CASTLE
fortified castle not far from the town center, an ancient strategic location in the southeastern Pale region.
Not far from Carlow town centre, the eponymous castle was built in the 13th century by the Earl of Pembroke and Lord of Leinster William Marshall (probably between 1207 and 1213). The castle, which is similar in appearance to Ferns Castle, was a strategic location in the south-east of the Pale. It was partially destroyed in the 18th century, but only two of the four towers and the eastern side of the ramparts remain. It is from the banks of the River Barrow that the view of the castle is the most beautiful and photogenic.
