Brownshill Dolmen (Dolmain Chnoc an Bhrúnaigh in Gaelic), one of the most imposing in Ireland and even in Europe, lies peacefully in the middle of the fields three kilometres east of the town of Carlow. This 5,000-year-old burial site, classified as a national monument by the Republic of Ireland, is particularly well preserved and is sealed by a block of stone at the top, known as the "table", supposedly weighing more than 150 tonnes. The mystery remains as to the handling of these gigantic granite blocks during the megalithic period...
