DUNMORE CELLAR
Remarkable series of limestone caves and cavities, with stalactites and stalagmites, for an unusual and impressive visit
10 km north of Kilkenny, a series of limestone caves and caverns with stalactites and stalagmites. It is said that in 928 the Vikings massacred women and children who had taken refuge in the caves. In 1973, human remains were found along with Viking coins (the main theory is that the unfortunate people died when the barbarians set fire to the cave). The Visitor Centre presents the history of the cave and its geological formation. An unusual and impressive visit, but beware of the 700 steps up.
