Historic brewery, one of the oldest in Ireland, with a museum on the history of Smithwick's beer.
Built on the site of a former Franciscan abbey, where beer was already being produced in the 13th century (!), this brewery, which was in operation until 2013, is now open to the public. Smithwicks, founded in 1710, is one of the oldest breweries in Ireland and one of the jewels in Kilkenny's crown. This modern and very successful museum, recently renovated, will take you through the history of Smithwick's beer (pronounced Smit-icks). In about an hour, you can learn about the production process of the precious nectar.
