LISMORE CASTLE ARTS
Superb château housing a contemporary art gallery and boasting superb gardens with sculptures, pretty flowerbeds...
The present appearance of this superb castle is due to the architect Sir Joseph Paxton, who redesigned much of the building between 1840 and 1858 for the sixth Duke of Devonshire. The most famous visitor in the castle's recent history is the American dancer Fred Astaire, who regularly visited Lismore between 1932 and 1944 to see his sister Adele, who was married to the tenth Duke of Devonshire.
Today, only the beautiful gardens are open to the public and part of the castle also houses a contemporary art gallery, whose exhibitions and demanding programme (which changes every year) are always critically acclaimed. Occasional art events and workshops are also held here. The Lower Garden has been given a permanent exhibition of sculptures by contemporary artists such as Richard Long, Anthony Gormley and Paul Nash, to name only the most famous. They blend in with the environment, appearing subtly behind trees or at the bend in a path. The Upper Garden is a terraced garden, from which there is a beautiful view of the bell tower of St Carthage Cathedral. The gardens are lush and flowery, with beautiful flower beds.
For lovers of medieval castles! It is possible to sleep in the sumptuous rooms of Lismore Castle (minimum stay 2 nights) but you will have to pay the full price. More details: www.lismorecastle.com.
