ORMOND CASTLE & ELIZABETHAN MANSION
Ruined castle opposite Elizabethan Manor House, one of Ireland's finest examples of Elizabethan architecture.
The ruined castle, dating from 1450, is not very interesting. However, the Elizabethan Manor House opposite is one of the finest examples of an Elizabethan house in Ireland. Recently restored, this manor house was built by the tenth Earl of Ormond, Thomas Butler, in anticipation of a visit from his cousin, Queen ElizabethI. The exterior has gabled roofs and fine mullioned windows, the interior has moulded plasterwork and a large gallery.
