CORK CITY GAOL
Cork's former prison has been converted into a museum, and is the perfect place to visit to find out about inmate conditions.
This former prison, which was used from 1824 to 1923 - the year it was closed for reasons of insalubrity and overcrowding - has now become a museum where the living conditions of the prisoners are shown. From an architectural point of view, the prison, designed by Sir Thomas Deane and now a listed building, looks more like a castle than a prison! The visit of the prison, which lasts about an hour, is done with an audio-guide (in French) who will tell you in a very lively way the fate of some prisoners who passed behind these walls.
