GARNISH ISLAND
Italian garden, with Greek temples, ponds, tropical vegetation and a remarkable tower, located on an island in Glengarriff.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the English architect Harold Peto created this Italian-style garden on the island, accessible by boat. The first surprise of the crossing is this rock populated with seals. The whole garden is beautifully exotic: Greek temples and Italian-style pools, tropical vegetation from Australia, Japan or New Zealand, bonsai trees... Numerous flowering plants also flourish: rhododendrons, magnolias, camellias... A curiosity: a Martello tower. It was built around 1805 to watch over potential Napoleonic invasions.
