ST MARY'S CATHEDRAL
Majestic neo-Gothic cruciform cathedral near Killarney National Park, with imposing organ
It is with the architect Augustus Pugin that we owe this majestic cruciform cathedral, located at 500 meters with foot of the access to the national park of Killarney. It was built between 1842 and 1855 in the neo-gothic style. In the 1840s, the church was used as a hospital during the Great Famine. The tree outside marks the spot where many of the victims of that dark time are buried. Inside the cathedral, you can admire an imposing organ dating from 1869 and beautiful coloured stained glass windows.
