FORT DÚN AN ÓIR
Fort with a memorial to the foreign soldiers who helped the Irish fight for independence.
Not far from the village of Ballyferriter, going a little further north, a battle took place here in the 16th century between the Irish - aided by the Spanish and Italians - and the English. The English won the battle handily, and the massacre of the Irish is still remembered in Ireland. At the end of the fort, on a windswept rocky promontory, a memorial pays tribute to the 600 foreign soldiers who came to help the Irish in their fight for independence.
