ST MARY'S CATHEDRAL
Romanesque church founded in 1168, one of the first in Ireland, with a remarkable altar, one of the most imposing in the country
In honour of the Virgin Mary, this Romanesque church was founded in 1168 by order of Donald Mór O'Brien, King of Munster, making it one of the first in Ireland. Many alterations and additions have been made since then, but it still retains some of its original features. Of particular note are the almost fantastically carved choir stalls (15th century) and the altar (12th century), carved from a single block and reputed to be one of the largest in Ireland. Concerts are regularly held here. Please enquire.
