ST FLANNAN'S CATHEDRAL
Beautifulcathedral built by the O'Brien clan, dedicated to Saint Flannan and featuring a magnificent Romanesque portal.
Beautiful cathedral of the 13th century, built by the O'Brien clan, dedicated to Saint Flannan, a former abbot of the village, who became bishop in 639, and who lived in Killaloe in the 6th century. Beautiful Romanesque portal and, just next to it, the "Thorgrim Stone", a stone bearing both Oghamic (alphabet using some Latin signs, linked to the arrival of Christianity in Ireland) and Scandinavian inscriptions: probably a memorial stone for a Viking convert. In the basement, the oratory of St Flannan is typical of early Irish churches.
