KILCONNELL FRIARY
Franciscan monastery at Aughrim, probably Ireland's largest and most labyrinthine monastic ruin.
This Franciscan monastery (dating from the 14th century) is perhaps the largest and most labyrinthine monastic ruin in Ireland. It is very well preserved and its silence is all the more impressive, pierced only by the cry of crows. The succession of rooms, refectory, cloister, church, comes alive with a life of its own, while a few recent tombs (up to 1986) give it the character of a living cemetery. The square tower, still intact, is difficult to climb, but it offers an original view of the surrounding area.
