July 12, 1691 remains in the history of Ireland as one of the bloodiest days. This battle was held near the village of Aughrim and pitted the Jacobite troops of James II Stuart, the last Catholic king of England, against the forces of William of Orange, the Protestant Orangeists. It was William of Orange, who became king as William III, who triumphed. The defeat put a definitive end to Jacobite hopes. More than 7,000 soldiers lost their lives
