ATHLONE CASTLE & MUSEUM
Fortified castle on the banks of the River Shannon, with a museum displaying military uniforms and the story of J Count McCormack.
Built on the banks of the Shannon, the fortified castle (13th century) now houses a small museum. Athlone having been the seat of an important military garrison, a part of the museum exhibits military uniforms from the 17th century to nowadays. Another part is dedicated to John Count McCormack (1884-1945), an opera singer born in the town. A last gallery presents the history of the Shannon, the longest river in Ireland, as well as the fauna and flora of the region. In the tower of the castle there is also a small Folk Museum.
