The Slieve Bloom mountain range lies to the east of Birr, between Roscrea, Tullamore and Portlaoise. It offers splendid views from its windswept peaks, with Mount Arderin (527m) forming the highest point. Much of the site has been designated a protected area, and numerous walking and cycling routes have been designed to facilitate discovery. Today it is a very popular place, with picnic areas and hiking routes through mountains, valleys and forests.
