DONEGAL CASTLE
Castle built in the 15thon the banks of the River Eske, a former residence of the great O'Donnell family, worth a visit.
Built in the 15th century on a meander of the Eske for defensive purposes - the river protected it on two of its sides - this castle was the residence of the great O'Donnell family who ruled Donegal from 1200 to 1601. After a nine-year war with the English, the defeated O'Donnells left the castle and the command of the town was given to Sir Basil Brooke in 1611 who rebuilt it and added buildings. The two bodies of the castle, beautifully situated on the banks of the river Eske, are not lacking in elegance, especially the tower.
