USSHER FORT
Historic fort in Accra, a few steps from James Fort, an interesting museum to discover.
Ussher Fort was built in 1649 by the Dutch as Fort Crevecoeur on a rocky point between two lagoons. It is one of the three historic forts in Accra. It passed into British hands in 1868 and was used as a prison from its construction until 30 years ago (1993). The very first president of the Ghanaian nation, Nkrumah, was imprisoned here in colonial times. Ussher Fort, a few steps away from James Fort, is now a museum open to the public. A visit is recommended!
