INDEPENDENCE SQUARE / BLACK STAR SQUARE
A remarkable esplanade in Accra, inspired by the Soviet model and meant to embody pan-African ideology, worth discovering.
Inspired by the Soviet model and intended to embody pan-African ideology, Accra's immense central esplanade, a legacy of Kwame Nkrumah, can accommodate 30,000 people. Here stands the eternal flame of African liberation, lit by President Nkrumah himself. The place is irresistibly reminiscent of Moscow's Red Square in miniature. Parades are held here. A stadium built in 1961, Osu Castle and the Independence Arch line the square.
