In May, an antelope hunting party is held in Winneba. The first to bring back an animal to the chief is declared the winner.
In the Fante language, spoken by the inhabitants of the central region of Ghana, Aboakyer means "game hunt" or "animal hunt". This traditional festival takes place in the first week of May and sets fire to Winneba. It is one of the country's best-known festivals. The various groups of Asafo warriors must capture an antelope and bring it back alive to the chiefs and elders. The former are declared the winners and the animal is then sacrificed. This festival commemorates the ancient migration of the Simpafo people to Winneba.
