On the first Thursday of January, Elmina celebrates the new year: it is Edina Buronya, a moment of shared festivities.
It is traditionally held on the first Thursday of January in the small coastal town. Called Edina Buronya, it represents for the inhabitants of Elmina the period of purification, sacrifice and remembrance to welcome the new year. It also corresponds with the annual harvest period and is celebrated with great pomp and ceremony, with families and friends gathering around a good meal. On the eve of the festival, shots are fired at exactly midnight by the Paramount Chief to inaugurate the new year.
