The Ashanti Nkyidwo festival, whose name means "on Monday night," takes place in Essumeja, near Kumasi, every last Monday in November or first Monday in December. It is a very important festival celebrated by the Essumeja people to commemorate their origins. According to them, their ancestors came out of a hole on a Monday night and were followed by a dog and a lion, musicians and dancers. The gods are invoked at the time of this festival to ensure the protection and prosperity of the inhabitants.
