KEJETIA CENTRAL MARKET
A remarkable market in the heart of Kumasi, one of the largest in Africa, for an immersion in Ghanaian urban culture.
Located in the heart of Kumasi, the Kejetia Market is one of the largest markets on the African continent. It covers an area of 10 hectares and brings together over 10,000 exhibitors. Fires almost destroyed it in 1995, again in 2000, and again in 2010. But each time, the market quickly returned to its previous level of activity. The site is very busy, except on Sundays, and it's virtually impossible to get around or park around it. It's one of the city's most distinctive spots. For those unfamiliar with it, the impression given by this immensity and the hustle and bustle of the ever-moving crowd can be nothing short of incredible. Merchants from all over West Africa come here to sell an impressive variety of products. To spend time here is to plunge right into the heart of Ghana's urban culture. To find your way around, the northern part of the market is intersected by a railway line, which corresponds to the textiles area. To the south, you'll find the food section. At one end of the market, on the first floor, you'll find a string of restaurants and areas with tables and chairs for refueling. Beware of agoraphobes, even those who don't think they are: after a while, this human tide can make the unaccustomed seasick. Incidentally, the market suffered six floods (due to faulty pipes) in 2022 alone!
