RISIERA DI SAN SABBA
Industrial complex transformed into a camp for refugees fleeing the purge under Tito.
This industrial complex of the end of the 19th century housed the hulling and storage of rice. Then this large building was used for dark projects. In 1976, its rehabilitation as a memorial museum recalls its history. During the Second World War, it was transformed into a concentration camp by the fascists. Then the Nazis executed thousands of people here. At the end of the war, it was the Yugoslav partisans who closed it, liberating Trieste. Finally, it was still used as a camp for refugees fleeing the purge under Tito.
