TEATRO ROMANO
Roman theater with a lapidary museum preserving statues and engraved plates found in excavations.
At the foot of the San Giusto hill, the Roman theater, built in the 1st century AD and enlarged in the 2nd century, originally stood outside the city walls. It stood on the edge of the sea, which at that time reached right up to the urban perimeter. It could hold between 3,500 and 6,000 spectators. The statues and engraved plaques found during the excavations are preserved in the lapidary museum in the Castello di San Giusto (Museo Civico di Trieste). In summer, the site is open for open-air shows and concerts.
