Archaeological remains are scattered throughout the city. Behind the early Christian basilica, the Via Sacra follows the ancient course of the river Natisana and the remains of the quay of the river port of Aquileia, built of Istrian stone blocks, with the foundations of warehouses. It was here that goods from the Mediterranean and Central and Northern Europe passed through. On either side of the main road, the remains of the forum, decumanus, Roman domus and mausoleo Candia, a monumental tomb, have been unearthed.
