Medieval joust between the five districts of Cividale del Friuli, with an archery contest and a foot race.
The summer in Cividale del Friuli is definitely rich in events! The Palio di San Donato is a joust of medieval origin that pits the five districts of the city against each other. They compete in various events, all dressed in 14th century costumes, the period in which the joust was first documented. Participants compete in a foot race, archery and axe competitions and a tournament. The prize is the palio, a piece of cloth that is displayed in the parish church of the winning district for one year.
