SANTA MARIA MAGGIORE
Church with remarkable corners and organ in Trento.
Built by the prince-bishop Bernardo Clesio between 1520 and 1524, according to the perfectly humanist model of the church of Sant'Andrea in Mantua, Santa Maria Maggiore hosted several sessions of the Council of Trent. Inside, the finely decorated corner and organ (1536) are a masterpiece of classical art. The building underwent a major renovation in 2015. Excavations on the ground revealed that it was built on the ruins of a church that existed from the5th to the 11th century, and then of another church built in the early 13th century.
