MAMBO E MUSEO GIORGIO MORANDI
Cathedral of the arts exhibiting a collection tracing the history of contemporary Italian art.
Inaugurated in 2007, MAMBO (Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna) is one of Italy's most outstanding museums of modern and contemporary art. This 9,500 m2 cathedral of the arts occupies the building of a former bread oven, itself a remarkable example of industrial architecture converted to the service of art. The museum's permanent collection retraces the history of contemporary Italian art from the Second World War to the present day, organized in nine thematic sections, such as "Art and Ideology", "Art and Action", "New Perspectives", etc. A laboratory for the exploration of new cultural forms in a city that has always been known as a city of experimentation, MAMBO regularly organizes monographic exhibitions dedicated to renowned Italian and foreign artists. The Mambo building also houses the Giorgio Morandi Museum, one of the greatest Italian artists of the 20th century. We discover more than 254 works by the Bolognese painter, his artist's studio and the famous bottles that Morandi painted, considering them as beings in their own right. Morandi's house can be visited, via Fondazza 36 (Friday and Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. from October to May and from 5 to 7 p.m. from June to September, Sundays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. all year round, free entrance on reservation). Finally, the MAMBO has a library specialising in contemporary art, a bookshop and a restaurant-cafeteria, which is very popular at aperitif time.
