BATTISTERO NEONIANO (DEGLI ORTODOSSI)
Baptistery of the Orthodox, octagonal shape with four apses
Built in the 5th century, it takes its name from Bishop Néone who decorated it with superb mosaics with golden accents. It is also called the Baptistery of the Orthodox to distinguish it from the Baptistery of the Arians. Octagonal in shape with four apses, it is covered by a dome decorated in its centre with the scene of Christ's baptism, surrounded by the twelve apostles. Next door, the cathedral (18th century) has a bell tower from the 10th and 11th centuries and an ambo from the 6th century.
