BASILICA DI SAN VITALE
Octagonal basilica, one of the most important monuments of early Christian art
This octagonal-shaped basilica was erected in 525 and consecrated in 548 under Emperor Justinian. The interior is surprisingly beautiful, thanks in particular to its superb mosaics. The scenes of the Sacrifice of Abraham and of Abel and Melchisedec, above the arches, show the astonishing dynamism of the composition; on the right-hand side, the Emperor Justinian and his retinue face the Empress Theodora and her maidservants. In the apse, a Christ in glory. The basilica is one of the most important monuments of Italian early Christian art.
