MAUSOLEO DI TEODORICO
Mausoleum consisting of two floors, the only one listed by Unesco that is without mosaics.
Erected by Theodoric around 520, the mausoleum stands isolated outside the historic centre. Huge ashlars were used for its construction, assembled without binding agents. The building consists of two floors: the lower one is decagonal in plan; the upper one is circular and is surmounted by a dome cut in one piece from Istrian stone, 11 metres in diameter. Inside, a basin was used as a sarcophagus for Theodoric. The monument has the peculiarity of being the only one in Ravenna listed by Unesco that is without mosaics.
