PALAZZO DUCALE
Resort palace, built in the baroque style in Sassuolo
In 1634, Duke Francis I d'Este commissioned his architect Bartolomeo Avanzini to transform the old medieval castle into a holiday resort for the retreats of the ducal court in the countryside. The palace is decorated in the baroque style and the frescoes are a real marvel. You only have to go into the heart of the Bacchus gallery, decorated in the 17th century by Jean Boulanger, to be convinced: the bodies in the effort are strikingly realistic. In most of the rooms, everything is majestic thanks to the trompe-l'oeil decorations.
