ABBAZIA DI NONANTOLA
Monastery of Romanesque style, founded in the VIII century in Nonantola
Founded in the 8th century, the monastery was a great spiritual centre during the Middle Ages. The Romanesque church was built in the 12th century and its portal is adorned with magnificent sculptures. The bare interior has three naves and a raised choir above a crypt that is among the largest of any Romanesque church in Europe. In the museum you can admire some paintings, illuminated manuscripts and parchments signed by Charlemagne and Frédéric Barberousse, as well as the reliquary of the True Cross from the 10th century.
