CAMERA DI SAN PAOLO
Private apartments of the abbess Giovanna da Piacenza
These are the private apartments of Abbess Giovanna da Piacenza, inside the Benedictine convent of St. Paul. The most remarkable room is the one decorated by the Correggio in 1519. The painted vault represents a lush pergola inhabited by naked toddlers and players, while at the base of the ceiling are mythological figures in grisaille. This was the first monumental decoration by the painter, who even dared to depict the abbess as Diana the Huntress. In the next room there is a vault decorated with splendid grotesques.
