TEATRO FARNESE
The Teatro Farnese is a prototype of the Italian baroque theater
Erected between 1618 and 1619, it is the prototype of the Italian Baroque theatre. The paintings, the columns, the statues, everything is trompe-l'oeil. It is made entirely of wood and its only function at that time was to show the power of the Farnese family. Between 1619 and 1631, it was only used nine times. In a city with only 20,000 inhabitants at the time, the theatre could accommodate 4,000. Absolutely grandiose and unique, it is simply impressive. Especially when you consider that, at the time, real naval battles were reproduced there thanks to an unprecedented water evacuation system. Almost completely destroyed during the Second World War, it was rebuilt identically in the 1950s.
