MOLE VANVITELLIANA
Pentagonal building with 3 decks organizing numerous exhibitions and artistic events.
Reflected in the water of the port, this pentagonal building is connected to the mainland by 3 bridges. It was built in 1773 by the architect Luigi Vanvitelli, at the request of Pope Clement XII, to serve as a fortress for the papal garrison. The lazaretto was a quarantine establishment where contaminated people were isolated, it also served as a fortification to defend the port, and as a place to store goods. The lazaretto hosts numerous exhibitions, artistic events and the Museo Tattile Omero.
