FRASASSI CAVES
Protected area with a series of gigantic limestone gorges and caves.
In the province of Ancona, in the heart of the Gola della Rossa and Frasassi Regional Nature Park, don't miss one of the most fascinating sights in Europe: the Frasassi Caves. 60 km from the "capital" of the Marche region, in the municipality of Genga, this protected area of over 10 hectares is characterised by a series of gigantic limestone gorges and caves that are among the most interesting in Italy. Discovered in 1971 by a member of the speleological group of Ancona (the Marche group of the Italian Alpine Club), these caves open on a first room 120 meters wide and 240 meters high. Specialists like to say that it could contain the Duomo of Milan. The visit, which lasts about 1h30 (possible in French), offers a spectacle of natural sculptures formed by limestone stratifications over 190 million years. The concretions of considerable size form silhouettes (even a witch!)... When the stalagmites (columns that grow from the bottom to the top) and the stalactites (that descend from the ceiling to the cavities) meet, they compose an organ! You will walk through several rooms dotted with a few small lakes on an itinerary of stalactites and stalagmites of impressive dimensions... For those who like adventure, it is possible to do caving courses (40 €), for beginners or initiated. Private guided tour 100 € + ticket (on reservation). Temperature inside the cave: 14°C all year round.
